This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues, It is applicable to support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, who come into contact with people with mental health issues where services and support provided are not mental health specific.

About this training:

CHCMHS005: Provide services to people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues is a collaborative, interactive, course for educators and people working with others who have mental health issues. It will help by providing information, problem-solving skills, and tools they need to successfully manage their consumers and clients.  The skills learned may avoid complications, through informed decision-making, and engaging consumers in healthy behaviours.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has worked with at least 3 people with mental health issues in ways that support individual empowerment and recovery through:

  • use of communication techniques
  • provision and adaptation of services to meet particular needs

This training has been funded for workers employed in a Victorian State-funded Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) service, including those who are new to the AOD sector or recently employed under the COVID-19 Workforce Initiative and Peer workers.

Who is not eligible?

Students on placement or internships, workers from other community sectors such as Family Violence, Homelessness and Mental Health and AOD workers outside of Victoria.

Please ensure you have clearance to attend from your line manager. If you are unable to attend, even if you find out the day before, please cancel your registration and make your spot available to someone else on the waiting list.
