Thorne Harbour Health was formed in 1983 as a central part of the Victorian community response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Thorne Harbour Health continues to lead the response by providing a range of services which include prevention education, treatment and care of PLHIV and counselling services. Thorne Harbour Health Training and Capacity Building aims to develop your workforce and improve sector capacity through training and education, reflective practice, and secondary consultation.   • Understand the context in which Family Violence (FV), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Sexual Assault (SA) impacts LGBTI+ people in Australia.
  • Gain knowledge from a framework for understanding FV and IPV in LGBTI+ communities and relationships.
  • Learn about common presentations to better support LGBTI+ individuals.
  • Understand barriers to accessing services (based on gender, sexuality and presentation).
  • Up to two case studies specific to the cohort receiving training (optional).
  • Understand the broader FV, IMV and SA issues for LGBTI+ communities.

Eligibility Criteria

This training is open to AOD workers in Victorian state-funded organisations and services. While not mandatory, it is highly encouraged to complete Trans and Gender Diverse Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness Training with Thorne Harbour Health prior to taking this training.

This training has been funded for workers employed in a Victorian State-funded Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) service, including those who are new to the AOD sector or recently employed under the COVID-19 Workforce Initiative and Peer workers.

Who is not eligible?

Students on placement or internships, workers from other community sectors such as Family Violence, Homelessness and Mental Health and AOD workers outside of Victoria.

Please ensure you have clearance to attend from your line manager. If you are unable to attend, even if you find out the day before, please cancel your registration and make your spot available to someone else on the waiting list.

About this training:

The four units listed below are included in the CHCSS00093 Skill Set for AOD workers. This training:

  • Provides skills and knowledge required to establish and work with; philosophy and values of the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector.
  • Conduct assessments of (AOD) clients to determine eligibility, service requirements and referral needs.
  • To establish treatment goals and to develop and evaluate individual treatment plans to meet those goals.
  • Conduct and monitor intervention strategies to address (AOD) issues. Interventions would be ongoing and be conducted under the guidance of a supervisor.

Units of competency:

  • CHCAOD001 – Work in an alcohol and other drugs context

What is covered?
The training covers the key challenges in working with complex forensic clients, understanding and strategies for working with these complexities, knowledge about how to work safely with complex forensic clients including those who have committed violent and sexual offences. The training also provides an opportunity to apply the information to your own practice using case examples and group discussion exercises.

This training is suited for any AOD clinician who has completed the Forensic Fundamentals training and has a minimum of 2 years’ experience with forensic clients.
